Lamb-hithe, or Lambhythe, is first referred to in a Charter granted to
that hamlet by Edward the Confessor in 1062. One can imagine what the
area looked like in those days from this given name - Lamb and Hythe (a
haven). Our Founders thought it preferable to perpetuate its ancient
name when they first met together on the 16th February, 1948 to petition
for the formation of this Lodge. All our Founders had associations with Lambeth either by birth, domicile or work and many were directly involved with Lambeth Town Hall. This connection has disappeared over time, and the Lodge currently has no particular connection with any external organisation. Our Mother Lodge is Sterndale Bennett Lodge No. 2182. Another early connection was musical (Sterndale Bennet was a 19c composer and musician). One of the Founders was a theatrical agent and impressario and a strong tradition of festive singing has been maintained to this day. The two Post-horns crossed on the Lodge badge were included to reflect this aspect of the Lodge. Our first regular meeting place was at Wingfield House in the South Lambeth Road, Stockwell. In the late 50s we moved to the Cafe Monico in Shaftesbury Avenue and when that was due for demolition we were accommodated in the Cafe Royal, in Regent Street. Wishing to support the concept of an independent Masonic Centre we moved to the Central London Masonic Centre in 1980. In 2013 we moved to Mark Masons' Hall at 86 St James's St. In 2006 the Lodge amalgamated with the Lodge of Loyal Companions No. 6993. Since then we have benefitted hugely from the contributions made by the members of that Lodge. In particular they donated our first ever banner, which now proudly adorns our meetings. A more recent legacy by Bro. Crouch of the Lodge of Loyal Companions provided for the purchase of port for all at the Festive Board at our annual Installation meeting in January. In 2024 we joined the Universities Scheme and we have now welcomed new generation of members. You can find more information about this scheme on the United Grand Lodge website here. |
